Piles of Dreams
by Mary Robinson
Most everyday, I ride by the corner of Vaughn Road and Old Hickory Blvd.
And everyday when I ride by that corner I am hit with the same emotions….my stomach goes topsy-turvy, sometimes my eyes fill with tears and always, I am overcome with great sadness. Sadness for all the flood victims whose lives are being lifted up from their neighborhood streets by big fork lifts and dumped into trucks, then at the corner of Vaughn and Old Hickory the trucks are unloaded by forklifts and their stuff is put into huge piles, piles of rubble…
Why the Media Ignored the Nashville Flood
by Andrew Romano
As you may have heard, torrential downpours in the southeast flooded the Tennessee capital of Nashville over the weekend, lifting the Cumberland River 13 feet above flood stage, causing an estimated $1 billion in damage, and killing more than 30 people.
It could wind up being one of the most expensive natural disasters in U.S. history.
Or, on second thought, maybe you didn’t hear.
Nashville Under Water
by Olivia Sarratt McCarthy
How you respond to crisis is a measure of your character. How a community responds is a measure of an entire culture.
Nashville is a special community of people who pull together and, even in times like these, look for the art among the devastation.
A Tennessee Waltz – 2010
The Tennessee Waltz is a formal gala with cocktails, seated dinner and dancing held in Tennessee’s historic State Capitol, one of the oldest working capitols.
Our proud capitol was built from 1845-1859, designed by William Strickland of Philadelphia, the architect of the day, who considered it to be his crowning achievement and is buried in the building’s northeast corner.
Toxic Teflon?
DuPont acknowledges that Teflon can kill birds and warns against using Teflon-coated cookware around pet birds. But that isn’t the point. This is literally a “canary in the coal mine” situation, and as in the old coal mines where birds were used for this, their death implies the presence of gases that could also be harmful to humans.
Eco-Fashion: Bamboo
by Penelope Jane Fox
With the environment weighing heavily in the minds of many people, eco-friendly clothing is quickly becoming a popular addition to many wardrobes. Though there are various materials that can be labeled “environmentally friendly,” one of the most environmentally friendly materials used in clothing production is made from bamboo fibers.
License to Procreate
by Jenny Isenman
Isn’t it baffling that everyday people like us are allowed to procreate without first passing a test or getting some kind of license?
Think about it, you need a library card to take out a five dollar novel, because you can’t be trusted to return it in a period long enough to read it four times over. You’re also required to pass a test to drive a car, sell a house, or be a lifeguard. You can take a class to learn how to give birth, but once that baby’s out, you’re on your own.

Getting gooped is a good thing. After living in Nashville for a few months filming “Love Don’t Let Me Down” with Tim McGraw, she took the time to travel around town, getting to know the icons and the start ups. She recently profiled her stay and her favorite spots in the city on her lifestyle website Goop.
Sleeping With Nigel
by Kathryn Taylor
I’m sleeping with Nigel now.
He’s the strong silent type. He’s black with soft, sweet brown eyes, and he just makes me melt. He’s always there for me, which is a very nice change of pace. He’s big and cuddly and I can depend on him to comfort me night after night. You should try him.
OMG! Am I OCD?
by Kathryn Taylor
Am I OCD? I don’t think so. I think I’m just fine. Other people might say, “She totally has OCD.” That’s okay. I’ve heard it all before. But I don’t know what they go on about. I get up in the morning like anyone else – right foot first and scamper off to the bathroom. It’s about 17 steps.
